7 Things No One Tells You About Making A Million Dollars

Okay, two things: 

1) This article is best for you if you are currently at $5k/month and want to break your plateau and scale. If you’re just getting started, I have lots of other good stuff for ya, but this one is not the most helpful. 

2) I get super vulnerable and honest in this article. Respect that, please. It takes courage to pull back the curtain like this and that’s why most business coaches don’t. So, read with an open mind and suspended judgment. Thank you.

1. People think you’re a millionaire…they forget about overhead.

In case you haven’t heard it before, there’s a very big difference between pulling in a millie in cash and having a net worth of a million dollars. I’ll be there soon enough but I think it’s important we talk about overhead. That way, you know what you’re in for when you hit your 7-figure year.

In the circles I run, coaching businesses take home anywhere from 45% to 60% profitable. Of course, this varies, depending on the business model and the industry. There’s always that one dude making $750k/month with one VA, but that’s not the norm.

 And there’s always those extremes on the other end, who have way too much overhead because they’ve thrown people at a problem…instead of building out proper systems and processes in place so they can bring more money home.

But yeah, overhead’s a thing. 

7-figures doesn’t mean millionaire status…although you’re well on your way.

2. Taxes are a bitch.

No way around it, you’ll be paying more in taxes.

My advice? Find a good tax strategist who will help you sort that shit out. 

I dilly-dallied on that one and ended up paying wayyy more than I should have because I didn’t have the proper structure in place. 

Here in the US (and probably elsewhere, let’s be real), taxes are one of those things that get talked about a lot, usually in context of the top not paying their share. 

Ex: did you know that I paid more in federal income taxes this year than Jeff Bezos did in 2017? Yup, I didn’t believe that, either. 

There’s LOTS that can be said about that issue but the end point, as it fits into this blog post, is this. 

When you make more, you will pay more taxes. A lot more.

3. You feel insanely guilty sometimes. It’s close to “survivor’s guilt.”

I am going to be real here. 

The narrative in our culture can feel very anti-money, very anti-capitalist.

And, at heart, I am a people pleaser. 

So sometimes, I feel weird about making good money. 

It’s not something I want to fully talk about just yet but here’s what I do know: 

1. It’s totally okay to start a business to be profitable. Wealth creation is not inherently wrong. 
2. Money is a neutral tool that can be used for good or for evil. 
3. I truly believe good people should make good money.

I’m not a therapist, I show people like you how I made $100k months. Business stuff. 

But just know it comes up and it’s something we get to work through.

4. You stop worrying about money so much, it’s amazing. You buy things and you rarely look at prices anymore. 

Unless it’s a large purchase, I really don’t check the price. 

Can I be honest? Even writing that out feels weird…maybe irresponsible. 

But, I wanted to give you a real insight into what it’s like (not just a fluff piece.) 

When I go into a store, I look at different things now. 

Is it a quality piece? 

Do I love it now? Will I love it in 5 years? 

And, do I want it? 

And if the answer is yes, I get it. 

That is such a different experience than I used to live, even only a few short years ago. 

(For those of you who don’t know my story, the short version is that, while I did have some privileges because I am a white woman, I was certainly not born with a silver spoon in my mouth.) 

So, as you can imagine, it’s incredibly surreal to just put things in my cart and check out. 

5. You are debt-free…if you want to be. Or you chose to leverage other people’s money to make even more money. 

Either way, I have new choices now that I didn’t always have. 

I did pay off a lot of debt when I first started making good money. 

Now, I actually see debt a little differently. 

My friend, Jereshia Hawk, talks a lot about using money as leverage to make more money.

Obviously, the choice is yours but that’s the whole point; you now have more choices around money.

6. It’s incredibly uncomfortable to talk about online — especially if family and friends follow you. But when you are connected to your mission, you do it anyways.

Oh my goodness, it’s so weird talking about this stuff online, isn’t it? 

I am sure you can relate, if you’ve been doing this longer than 2 seconds. 

But let me tell you…it gets wayyyyyyyy weirder when you start talking about things like income. 

Yoikes. 

Some friends and family are chill and it stays the same. 

Others get super super weird. 

But honestly, at the end of the day, it’s ok. 

It doesn’t really matter, in the grand scheme of your WHY. 

And I firmly believe that the women who are in my world need me to show up. 

They need me to talk about money. 

They need me to talk about my business. 

But, it’s true, no one really prepared me for the weird random little comments…but I just warned you…so now you have a head’s up. You’re welcome. 😉 

7. You realize you are part of the 1.7%.

Can I tell you a story? My team and I got curious about the amount of “Maria only work” I did. So we timed it. We clocked and categorized everything I spent my time doing for a month.
